How women view unwanted sexual experiences and the impact of their beliefs on sexual violence

Hello, my name is Maria Kaye. I am a BACP Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist, and also a PhD student at Leeds Beckett University. I would like to invite you to take part in my research study which aims to explore how women view unwanted sexual experiences and the impact of their own beliefs on how they make sense of this experience.

Invitation to participate:

Women who have experienced unwanted oral, vaginal, or anal sex with a man that they knew, are being invited to participate in a PhD research project at Leeds Beckett University. You must be over the age of 18 and living in the UK to take part and the man must not be a partner or ex-partner.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be invited to attend a two-part, 1-to-1 conversation. The conversation should last no longer than two hours. In the first part of the conversation, you will be asked to create a timeline exploring what has informed or influenced your thoughts and feelings around unwanted sexual experiences throughout your life. You will also be given a copy of the timeline guide at the beginning of our conversation, which we will discuss together, to support you in this activity.

The second part of the conversation will ask about your unwanted sexual experience. It is important that you are aware that you will be asked to describe the circumstances of your own unwanted sexual experience and any thoughts or feelings that you experienced in the days and weeks following the encounter. It is also important to know that you do not have to answer any questions unless you want to. If you begin to feel upset in any way, then you can take a break from the conversation or stop the conversation altogether. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions and the conversation will be guided by what you decide to share.

As a thank you for your time, you will receive a £20 voucher at the end of our 1-to-1 conversation.

What will happen on the day?

If you live outside of the West Yorkshire area, the conversation will take place online, over Microsoft Teams. If you live within the West Yorkshire area, you will also be offered the option to have the conversation face-to-face at Leeds Beckett University instead. Travelling costs of up to £20 will be reimbursed, although this will need to be arranged and paid for by yourself initially, with receipts provided for reimbursement.
