A Qualitative Exploration of Safety led by Ellie Hepworth, University of Exeter
Intimate partner violence/abuse affects people of all ages, yet older survivors are often excluded from research. Ellie is a researcher at the University of Exeter. She is aiming to address this exclusion in a study that specifically explores the experiences of survivors aged 70+, through the lens of safety.
The study asks:
- What does safety from intimate partner violence/abuse mean for survivors aged 70+?
- How do survivors 70+ negotiate safety?
By deepening understanding of what safety means and how it can be fostered by and with older survivors, this research aims to inform the development of services, policies, and systems.
Who can participate?
- Must be aged 70+ years old, and
- have experienced violence, abuse or control from a current or former intimate partner or spouse after turning 60 years old, regardless of whether this was a new experience or a continuation of abuse from younger age.
Why participate?
- The experiences you share will form an important part of the research findings
- The research findings will inform those who are designing and delivering services to help improve the safety of older people who have experienced violence or abuse.
What’s involved?
- A phone call with Ellie to confirm you would like to participate and meet the participation criteria.
- An interview with Ellie, where you can talk about what safety means to you, and ways you have made yourself safe. The interview will last approximately one-hour. It will take place in a safe location that is convenient for you. That can be in person, over the phone, or using video-call software (like Zoom or Microsoft Teams).
You will receive a voucher to thank you for your time, and any travel costs can be reimbursed in a way that suits you.
