16 Days of Activism to end gender-based violence

This year we are supporting the 16 Days of Activism by amplifying campaigns run by some of our Changemaker community members and allies, starting with this hugely important campaign #OpenJusticeForAll

The government has launched their pilot to allow victims of sexual offences access to their sentencing remarks for free. The pilot is open until May 2025.

Access to sentencing remarks allows victims to understand the reasoning of the judge, helping them heal and to hold the perpetrator to account.

While this pilot is only available for a small subsection of victims, it’s a step in the right direction. Feedback from this pilot will determine the next steps the government will take for access to court transcripts. Open justice For All will continue to campaign for full access for all victims.

To apply for a free transcript you must:

Be a victim of rape or sexual offences
Know the name of the defendant or defendants in the case
Know the name of the court where the sentencing hearing was held
Know the date of the sentencing hearing
Have your name and contact details
The sentencing hearing must have happened after March 2012.

Please note – The transcript can only be provided with the judge’s approval. Some parts may be redacted, for example if they include personal addresses or where reporting restrictions apply.

We estimate that over 26000 victims are eligible for the pilot and we want to ensure that every victim that is eligible knows that they can apply. So please help us spread the word.
